The idea of working from the comfort of your bedroom seems great and all- until you realize how hard it is to truly stay productive. It can be very easy to get distracted especially when you're in the room that your body already associates with sleeping. Here are some tips to stay productive and make the most of your time.
1. Office setup
As tempting as it may be to work from your bed in your pajamas, you’ll be a lot more productive if you take a step away from this. Try to make your WFH environment as similar to an office as possible. Work from the same spot in your house every day, and try to get dressed for the day! It puts you in the right mental state to be working and will allow you to be much more productive each day.
2. Get in a routine
Creating and sticking to a routine is the best way to minimize distractions. If you set a schedule and really follow it, you’ll be less tempted to take breaks and slack off. Holding yourself accountable and keeping to a routine is the key to staying on top of your work. Also, make sure that you are on the same page as your co-workers.
3. Plan ahead and set goals
At the beginning of each week, create a to-do list. Come up with tangible and measurable goals that you’d like to accomplish each week, and really hold yourself accountable to them. This goes hand in hand with your routine- try to build these goals into the schedule for the week so that you can stay on track. And, with everyone working from home, finding an accountability buddy could be the way to go.
4. Interact with people
One major difference between working from home and being in an office is the social aspect. In your office, you probably take breaks, walk around and socialize with coworkers, something that has become impossible to do from home. Believe it or not, these breaks really increase your productivity and help you stay on task. That’s why it’s important to take breaks and interact with whoever you can. If you have family at home, take a walk into the kitchen and talk to them. If not, text another co-worker or friend to give yourself a quick break from your hard work- it really makes a difference. If you are feeling isolated and stuck at home, QBuddy is a great way to branch out and meet new people to interact with throughout the day. Even try to meet some new people!
5. Make it a real workday
When working from home, it’s not like you hop on a train and head home at the end of the day. There’s no real separation between your work and home life, no clear end at the end of the day. This makes it really easy to get caught up in work and end up working on a project until the late hours of the night and not maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It is so important to pick a clear stopping time at the end of the day and stick to it. When you’re done with work, spend time with family, connect with friends virtually, or even meet a new friend.
